TRAJAN’S MARKET
In Rome opposite the Colosseum, Trajan’s Market was designed by Apollodorus of Damascus and built around 100 AD as a multi level mixed use structure with shops, offices, and apartments.
The structure has been transformed over the centuries including a tower in the middle ages. The Museum of the Imperial Fora opened in 2007 displays artifacts from Rome’s forums. The entrance leads from a former shopping area to a balcony overlooking the markets, Trajan’s Forum and the city beyond. Two large adjacent halls were used for auditions and concerts. The site is much less crowded and you can imagine daily life in ancient Rome more easily. The architects of the firm Labics designed the restoration and small interventions to connect areas out of steel, distinct from the historic features.
