The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art reopened in 2016 with a ten story addition designed by the Norwegian architects Snohetta. The original building facing Third Street was designed in 1995 by the Swiss architect Mario Botta. The facade is covered with rippling white fiberglass reinforced plastic panels.

PARRISH ARt MUSEUM

Herzog and de Meuron designed the Parrish Art Museum for a 14 acre site in Water Mill. They drew inspiration from the local barns that artists like Jackson Pollock used as studios.

The simple section was generated around a circulation spine and then extruded for over 600 feet with a porch at each end. The building is oriented with its skylights facing north creating a diagonal relationship with the site. Public areas are on the west and service areas on the east. Heart pine salvaged from a demolished textile mill gives the galleries warmth. Concrete walls bracket the sides with a continuous bench with a view of the landscape design that evokes the area’s agricultural heritage.

Nearby you can find wineries like Wolffer Estate Vineyards as well as restaurants like Armin & Judy for a savory or sweet lunch.

Stop by this museum next time you are on the east end of Long Island.
