MAXXI MUSEUM

Opened in 2009 and designed by Zaha Hadid, the MAXXI Museum is the national museum of contemporary art in Rome.

The site is a former military barracks and incorporates parts of the existing structures. Two sections of the urban grid converge at this site at a diagonal. Flowing and drifting forms move around the site like ribbons. manipulating the field and the object, layering on top of one another. The museum is entered through a courtyard with the curving concrete forms rising overhead. A system of louvers and screens modulate the natural light. Winding staircases provide access to upper levels. Solid black walls along the steps contrast with open gratings. The design blurs the boundaries between inside and outside with walls that intersect and separate to create interior and exterior spaces.

There are many places where you can observe the activities in the museum including the cafe. Be sure to see this museum in Rome.
