DSNY GARAGE & SALT SHED

The City of New York built a sanitation department garage and salt shed along the west side of Manhattan designed by WXY Studio and Dattner Architects.

The garage includes maintenance and parking for the trucks that pick up trash and spread salt in winter. The garage is enclosed with perforated metal fins and a green roof is provided at the top level. Next door, a concrete structure stores 5,000 tons of salt in a sculptural form as a counterpoint to the garage. The design makes these utilitarian buildings landmarks in the neighborhood.

Nearby try the Ear Inn serving drinks since 1817.
