De YOUNG MUSEUM

The de Young Museum is located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park between the lawn, palm trees and a eucalyptus grove. It was completed in 2005 from a design by the Swiss firm Herzog and de Meuron.

The entrance is cut out of the facade and leads to an open air courtyard. Once you are inside, a grand stair brings you to the upper levels and has views of light wells filled with ferns.

A twisting 144 foot tower anchors the design and turns to align with the city grid beyond. The tower has views of the park and the surrounding city.

A public sculpture garden and a terrace sit beyond the cantilevered roof.

The building’s facade is constructed with embossed copper panels that are customized for varying locations around the building.

Hungry? Try the museum’s de Young Cafe for a snack or lunch.
