CoLOSSEUM & ROMAN FORUM 

Completed in 80 AD in Rome, the Colosseum is built of travertine limestone, volcanic rock, brick and concrete.

Designed as an elliptical amphitheater with tiered seating levels, it was used for a variety of events and public spectacles. By the 6th century, changes in use were starting to take place, and some of the spaces were converted into apartments and shops. Stone was stripped away and iron clamps that held the stone in place were removed to be reused. Over the years popes have funded repairs and erected crosses in the Colosseum.

Nearby the Roman Forum, is an ancient plaza originally surrounded by government and commercial buildings. The forum sits between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills and is a ruin with architectural fragments of the structures that once occupied the site. Since the forum sits in a spot surrounded by hills subsequent layers of development were added on top of each other.
